Vessel Service Review

Sea Ray 325 “Megisti” Twin Mercruiser 4.3L V6 petrol engines · Twin Mercruiser Bravo 3 sterndrives · D’Albora Marina, The Spit

An analysis of the 2026 annual-service quote against the 2025 overhaul — comparing the two yards on labour rate and part pricing, separating work that was genuinely replaced / rebuilt from items now merely inspected, and assessing whether the quote represents fair value.

Routine annual service
The key point: A major overhaul was carried out in late 2025 — exhaust manifolds & risers, sterndrive internals, bellows, circulation pumps, spark plugs and distributor caps were all replaced with new parts. So the 2026 quote is a routine annual service: it replaces the usual consumables (oils, filters, impellers, anodes, thermostats) and otherwise inspects and checks parts that are barely six months old. Very little of the 2026 work is “new” — most of it is confirming the recent work is holding up.

2025 spend (both invoices): $27,960.77  ·  2026 annual quote: $6,995.46

Provider & pricing analysis

The 2026 work is quoted by a different yard to the one that did the 2025 job. Here is how the two compare on labour rate, on the parts that appear in both, and on what you actually get for the money.

Xtreme Mobile Marine
Did the 2025 overhaul + extras (INV-0293 & INV-0313)
$150.00 / hr · ex GST ($165 inc)
  • Repair-led job: 68% parts, 31% labour
  • Knows the vessel’s full history
  • Capped 6.75 hrs of labour as goodwill
  • Folded diagnostics into hourly labour
Onboard Marine Services
Quoted the 2026 annual service (QU-0361)
$163.64 / hr · ex GST ($180 inc)
  • Service-led job: 66% labour, 30% parts
  • +$13.64/hr — 9.1% dearer on labour
  • More detailed: engine-room detail, corrosion inhibitor, sea-trial reporting
  • Adds a separate $145.45 diagnostic fee
Key finding — the labour scope is the same, only the rate differs. Both yards independently scoped the annual service at exactly 25.5 labour hours (Xtreme: 17.75 sterndrive + 7.75 engine; Onboard: 8.5 sterndrive + 17.0 engine). At Xtreme’s rate those 25.5 hours would cost $3,825; Onboard charges $4,172.73 — a $347.73 premium purely on the hourly rate, not on doing more work. That’s strong evidence the quote’s time is fair — you’re paying market hours at a slightly higher rate.

Like-for-like part pricing (parts that appear in both jobs)

Unit prices ex GST. Green = Onboard cheaper; red = Onboard dearer.

PartXtreme 2025Onboard 2026DifferenceWhat it means
HP gear oil $30.90$25.99 −15.9% Onboard is cheaper here — a genuine saving on a bulk consumable.
Oil filter $23.10$26.78 +15.9% Modest mark-up, within normal supplier variation.
Impeller $72.00$100.36 +39.4% Onboard prices it as a kit (incl. face-plate gaskets), so partly justified — but confirm.
Engine oil query $11.80$35.18 +198% Biggest red flag. Nearly 3× the unit price. Likely a different product/measure (bulk litre vs premium bottle) — but if it’s the same oil, that’s ~$280 of overspend on this line alone. Ask Onboard to specify grade & quantity.
Fuel filtration $34.00
1 generic filter
$68–$84
disc + cartridge + primary
n/a Not like-for-like — Onboard fits three distinct filter types. More thorough, but a bigger fuel-filter spend ($446 vs $68).
Labour (per hour) $150.00$163.64 +9.1% $13.64/hr more. Over the 25.5-hr service that’s +$347.73.

Where your money goes

The two jobs are fundamentally different in nature — and the split proves it.

Xtreme 2025 — INV-0293 (repair-led) $22,207.75 ex GST
Parts 68%
Labour 31%
Onboard 2026 — QU-0361 (service-led) $6,359.51 ex GST
Labour 66%

Fees 4.5%
Labour Parts Fees

In 2025 you were buying hardware — new manifolds, drives, pumps. In 2026 you are buying time — inspection of that near-new hardware plus routine consumables. That is exactly the right shape for an annual service the year after a major refit, and it’s why the 2026 bill is a quarter of the 2025 one.

Fees — and one to question

Onboard’s sundry fees ($286.36) are roughly double Xtreme’s ($145.00 on the main job), driven mostly by one line:

Diagnostic plug-in fee — $145.45. Onboard lists this as a separate charge, yet the engine-service labour already includes “plug in diagnostic computer, check and erase all fault codes.” Xtreme folded diagnostics into its hourly labour with no separate fee. Worth asking Onboard whether this is an additional charge on top of labour that already covers the same task.

What the higher rate buys you

The 9% premium isn’t purely markup — Onboard’s quote spells out work Xtreme’s terser labour lines didn’t itemise:

Extra detailing

  • Full engine-room degrease & wash-down
  • Touch-up paint & corrosion inhibitor on all components

Documented testing

  • Battery load-test with report
  • Sea trial with parameters reported
  • Diagnostic scan & fault-code report

Preventive extras

  • New thermostats (not done in 2025)
  • Fresh anodes + drain-plug seals
  • Fuel treatment & system prime

Verdict: the Onboard quote is fair, with ~$800 of questions worth raising.

The labour hours match Xtreme’s own annual-service scope, the rate premium is small and buys a more thorough, better-documented service, and gear oil is actually cheaper. It is a sound quote — not padded. Before approving, put these specific line items to Onboard; together they are the only soft spots in the price:

Engine oil unit priceConfirm grade & quantity — $35.18/unit vs Xtreme’s $11.80.~$280
Diagnostic plug-in feeAlready covered by labour description — is it additional?$145
Labour rate premium+$13.64/hr over 25.5 hrs — ask if negotiable/price-matchable.$348
Impeller “kit”Confirm the kit includes gaskets that justify +39%.~$57
Potential to clarify / save~$830

Optionally, since Xtreme already knows the boat and is 9% cheaper on labour, you could invite them to quote the same annual service for a direct comparison — unless there’s a reason you’re moving yards.

Recommended service to carry out

Proceed with the Onboard Marine annual service (QU-0361) — the scope is appropriate. Because the heavy work was done in late 2025, this service is correctly a light-touch annual: it renews the consumables that should be renewed every year, and inspects rather than replaces the recently-fitted parts. You are not paying twice for the 2025 work.

  1. Approve the annual service — oils, filters, impellers, anodes, thermostats and the full inspection/sea-trial. This is money well spent to protect the 2025 investment.
  2. Raise the bypassed hot-water service before the job — the corroded fitting flagged in 2025 was never resolved and is not in this quote. Ask Onboard to inspect and quote it separately.
  3. Ask them to pay special attention to the 2025 repair points while inspecting — bellows/clamps, sump gasket, and the transducer/bung seals — to confirm the recent work is holding up.
  4. Confirm anode condition — anodes weren’t separately itemised in 2025, so a fresh set now is sensible.
One outstanding item to watch: the hot-water service was bypassed in 2025 due to a corroded fitting at the unit, and it does not appear in the 2026 quote. It remains the one genuinely unfinished job — worth getting inspected and quoted.
